"Photography is the story I fail to put into words"
-Destin Sparks
I have always enjoyed taking pictures, but never really paid much attention to how I was capturing my photos. Never once did I notice the different perspectives I used, the objects I photographed or the details that showed repetition in many of my photos. Nature has always been something that I appreciate. It is something that is beautiful no matter what. As the photographer, when shooting nature it is waiting for natural light to illuminate a special moment. I enjoy capturing the many colors that sunsets produce. Having a great deal of freedom while taking pictures really allowed me to appreciate things that others take for granted everyday. The camera itself allows me to capture life the way I see it. I hope that my pictures are able to be interpreted in several ways by the viewer as well as allow the viewer to gain an appreciation for some of the same things I have.
Working with film was a whole new experience for me. I was so used to being able to point and shoot and then view the picture right after. At first it was difficult to understand shutter speed as well as the different aperture settings simply because it was all new to me. However, I really enjoyed the surprise that I received after viewing my processed film. I never really knew how my pictures were going to turn out. Along with never working with film I had never worked in the dark room. This experience was very neat as it was a trial and error basis. I liked being in control of how my pictures turned out based on the lightness and darkness of the overall picture.
I was never a fan of black and white photos simply because I felt that pictures needed color to help portray a message, however, after working with black and white film I grew to love these photos. In fact, they do tell a story to the viewer, but just in a different way. Black and white photos allow each individual to interpret them very differently while using a great deal of imagination while giving a sense of mystery.
As a photographer I shoot with purpose. I aim to shed light on things that many people look over from day to day. My photos tell a story based on my life and I hope that each of my viewers are able to create a story that is associated with each of my photos. I hope to engage everyone's imagination while they view my photos. I hope people are able to see what I see in my photos, but with their own twist. As I take pictures I am drawn into a simple object, but it goes much farther than that. Each photo displays some form of complex line or curve which leaves much room for individuals to imagine the scene as they wish. I am very texture orientated when it comes to my pictures. As I take photos I aim for a focal point in my picture and everything else around it is what frames the rest of my photo.
